Curb appeal is the first thing you notice with any home, whether you recognize this or not. When you’re house shopping, you’re automatically drawn to the homes with beautiful lawns in the front yard and if you’re trying to sell your home, the first thing you make sure looks great for potential buyers is the outside of your home. Especially when you’re living in a neighborhood, you want to make sure your home is comparable to (if not more appealing than) your neighbors homes: aka ‘the competition’. Here are a few things you can do around your home to enhance your curb appeal.
Ask for Tips and Make a Plan
Beautiful landscaping can increase the value of your home, so before you start making changes to your yard, be sure you are making worthwhile adjustments. Real estate agents know better than anyone what buyers want to see on the outside of their home and can assist you in permanently upgrading your curb appeal and help you to avoid trends that won’t last. Once you have an idea of what should be done, make a plan before you jump into it. Be careful to be realistic about your financial and time budgets.
Do Some Planting
When you first move into a home, plant a few trees around your property. After a few years your trees will grow and you will love having the extra shade around your home, and your house will look great surrounded by greenery. One of the easiest things you can do to spruce up the outside of your home is to plant some flowers. Spend an afternoon planting around the outside of your home and you’ll be amazed by what a little pop of color and some freshly spread mulch can do to improve your curb appeal.
Power-Wash
At least once a year, take out a power-washer and clean the outside of your home. It’s surprising what a good clean wash can do for the outside of your home. By spraying down your house’s exterior you will be able to get rid of those cobwebs that have been growing in hard to reach places, and spray away all the leaves and dirt off your deck and driveway. Spring is the optimal time for power-washing your home because you can clean away all the dirt that has accumulated over the winter and get your house looking clean and fresh. Don’t forget the driveways, walkways, and sidewalks. Clean, fresh looking pavement can go a long ways in adding curb appeal.
Declutter
Do you have things in your front lawn that are taking up space? Buyers want to look at your home and see the potential in what they can do to it, not so much the creative choices you’ve taken to since you’ve been there. Do you have animal statues and fountains in your garden? Are there brightly colored objects like fences, flags, and flamingos? Though your personal style might be adored by your friends, buyers want to see a clean, simple, well organized space. This is not only nice to look at, but it gives them the room they need to imagine what of their tastes they can incorporate into this new space.
Hire a Professional
After getting home from a long day of work, the last thing you want to do is go outside to mow the lawn and clip the hedges. If you find that you’re too exhausted or simply not motivated to do yard work, hire a professional to maintain your yard for you, especially while you’re in the process of selling. By paying someone to enhance your yard, you get all the benefits of having a gorgeous lawn without having to do all of the work. Lawn care professionals have every tool from mowers and edgers, to hedge trimmers and leaf blowers. They tend to have tools that not every homeowner has on hand and which can take your lawn from good to great in just an afternoons time.
