Getting Settled in Park City- Tips for New Homeowners

August 13, 2021 by Jensen and Company

As the seasons change and temperatures fluctuate, one thing remains certain: Park City remains a much-desired destination for homeowners all over the country. Park City, Utah, is known as America’s Winter Playground, but there are many things to do every season.

Now, it’s important you know that as home to some of the top skiing destinations in the country, there will be snow. And lots of it. Park City weather brings with it an average of 340 inches of snow per year.

The snow, of course, comes with cold temperatures during the winter with average lows of 13°F and highs of 34°F on the coldest days. The summertime brings welcome sunny days reaching the low 80s, though you may still need a light sweater in the evenings with lows still hitting the 40s.

Home to incredible restaurants, breweries, ski lodges, and hiking trails, Park City remains a prime cultural center in the west. Also playing host to major events such as the Sundance Film Festival and the 2002 Winter Olympics, it continually remains a good event-based destination as well.

While Park City is known as a place for outdoor adventurers, it is also rated one of the best cities for jobs in America. Park City’s population has grown over 15% in the past decade, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation.

Relocating to Park City is an excellent move for those looking to expand their careers, grow their families, and find a bit of adventure along the way. Here are five tips to help newcomers to the area.

The Cost of Living in Park City

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah ranks as the 28th most expensive state to live in the United States. If you choose to live closer to a metropolitan area, then the cost of living, taxes, and finances can become even higher.

There are many homes in the area, from people looking for a first family home to someone looking for a larger property or a supplementary home.

When looking at the cost of living in Park City compared to the national average, Park City’s housing expenses are listed as 164% higher according to PayScale. Although these numbers may seem daunting, the cost of living tends to average out. This is because expenses such as retail, food, and utility prices can be up to 22% lower in Park City compared to other major cities across the US.

Convenient Neighborhoods in Park City

Silver Springs is an excellent spot for those young families looking for a first home with an easy commute into the valley. Homes range in design and price, but the community is consistently friendly. The flat streets, convenient access to the city (including the free bus service), and family-friendly ambiance make Silver Springs an ideal location.

Jeremy Ranch’s proximity to Salt Lake City, the valley, the mountains, and various outdoor activities make it an incredible location to live in Park City. Because of its quieter location outside the reaches of local ski resorts, you will find that the prices are lower. Most of the residents here live in single-family homes year-round, which creates a consistent and connected community.

Trailside is another neighborhood that is good for both new families or those looking to settle down. There are excellent schools nearby and lots of other families that live in the community. The single-family homes in this area are moderately priced, well designed, and all have great views of the mountains. Kimball Junction is also located nearby – an area that has excellent shopping, dining, and activities.

Schools in the Area

For those moving to Park City with their young family, you’ll likely want some info about the local school systems. Information can be found about the town’s school system on the website or by simply visiting the schools or asking locals.

You can rest easy knowing that Park City is home to some of the best schools in Utah and even top-ranked in the nation. Last year, Park City High School was ranked number 2 in the state and joined the national rankings as well.

With both private and public options, you’ll have plenty of great choices among Park City schools. The area also houses a small campus for Utah State University, where students can choose between a wide range of degree and certificate options.

Park City Learning Center is an extension of Park City High School that also offers the main courses required for graduation on a quarter to quarter basis, more focused on the students’ individual needs. Students have the chance to participate in smaller, intimate classes for individualized learning.

Activities and Recreation

One of the best parts about living in Park City is all of the incredible things to do. Park City offers terrific opportunities for kids to grow up with adventure and a connection to nature.

But be prepared for colder months, as you will often see snow for five months or more out of the year. Park City is near Park City Resort, Deer Valley, Brighton, Alta, and Snowbird ski resorts. Other fun winter sports include dog sledding, snowmobiling, snow-shoeing, and sledding.

You can fish, mountain bike, hike, and more in the beautiful surrounding area around Park City in the summer.

If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, a short road trip will land you at some of the countries’ most incredible national parks like Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Arches National Park.

Gym-lovers should check out Silver Mountain Sports Club and Spa, a gym with everything you’d need or want. There are free weights and machines, lots of cardio, and a nice outdoor lap pool with a gorgeous view of Park City. This space also features trek gear, friendly staff, lots of towels, and plastic bags for soiled workout wear, and lockers also have combo locks.

Those looking for a different workout experience should check out MinersTown Strength and Conditioning. This spot is a great training facility and warm community led by skillful people. They offer CrossFit, Functional Range Conditioning, Kinstretch, nutrition, and chiropractic neurology.

Food and Fun

With many restaurants, breweries, and events happening year-round, you won’t ever be bored in Park City. And with close proximity to Salt Lake City, big-city shopping and dining are never far away.

For those looking to buy some groceries, check out Smith’s. This recently remodeled store is known to have fantastic prices, a wide selection, and a friendly staff. They have gelato, soft-serve ice cream, stone-fired pizza, and lots of ready-to-go food for those not cooking-inclined.

Another good grocery store option in the area is The Market at Park City. This is a locally owned and operated grocery store. They have areas where they prepare fresh food and baked goods and have a café with a barista.

There are three post offices in the area for locals; one on Main Street, one on Park Avenue, and one in Kimball Junction. Be aware that Main Street is sometimes blocked off. The city will often block the main street from cars so pedestrians can freely walk, shop, and dine.

Overall, Park City is the perfect town for adventuring, growing your career, and raising a family. If you are looking to move to the area, consider using Jensen and Company as your resource for all of your real estate needs.
